English Corner

Дети в нашей школе начинают изучать английский язык со второго класса, так как наша школа - это школа с углубленным изучением английского языка. Но для тех, кто уже в первом классе хочет разговаривать, петь, читать стихи на английском, играть в английские игры, учителями школы проводится курс "Enjoy English". Так что же это за язык, на котором говорит вся планета?

MYTH
My favorite English word is “myth” because pronouncing this word you have a feeling of something wrapped in mystery. This word was borrowed by the English language in 1830. It came from the Greek word “mythos” which meant “speech, thought, and story of unknown origin”. Since 1840 it has got a general sense of "untrue story, rumor".
The origin of the word “myth” seems to be a myth in itself. Myths have generally originated from a Greek history that used an oral tradition to explain events that occurred before the written word. Often supernatural beings or fictitious characters were used to explain popular ideas concerning phenomenon of nature or the history of people. The myths that were carried on from generation to generation were often very imaginative in an attempt to spark the interest of young listeners. These would be told at social gatherings. The main purpose of a myth was to relay historical information among groups. Early myths often dealt with the origin of man, customs, religious rights, incidents involving the lives of gods, stories of culture heroes, adaptations of old world myths, or the retelling of biblical stories.
The Webster’s dictionary gives the meaning of the word myth as “a story or legend” A collection of tales and legends about gods and heroes in the Greek mythology played an important role in the religion of the ancient Greeks. They learnt the question of the power and immortality in different religions, as well as the themes connected with the creation of the universe.
Although people of all countries, eras, and stages of civilization have developed myths that explain the existence of the world and natural phenomena and recount the deeds of gods or heroes, the myths of the Greeks have remained unrivaled in the Western world as sources of imaginative and appealing ideas. Poets and artists from ancient times to the present have derived inspiration from Greek mythology and have discovered contemporary significance and relevance in Classical mythological themes.
So learning and studying myths and legends of the past is necessary for understanding historical and literary heritage of the mankind. The students are supposed to study mythology of different cultures as a part of school, high school, college or university educational programs.

SNOWBOARD

I like the word “snowboard”, because it connects two “sport” words "snow" and "board".
The word “snow” (n.) (Old English “snaw”) came from the Old Germanic word “snaiwaz” and meant “getting wet”. The word “board” came from the Old English word “bord” which meant "a plank, flat surface” and nowadays it has the same meaning.
A board is a deck with a special coverage.  There are two fastenings for feet on it; also there are two metal edgings for traffic control, named the general term <перекантовка>. On the one hand snowboarding is a sport but on the other hand it is one of the elements of the sport costumes. This sport has a lot of kinds of driving. One of them is a half-pipe driving – it is a pipe where people drive from one edge to another, doing different tricks.
The first modern similarity of a snowboard was a snurfer (“snurfer” is a word made of two others — snow ("snow") and surf — ("surf"), This sport equipment was thought up and made by Sherman Poppenom for his daughter in 1965 in the city of Muskegon, the State of Michigan. It consisted of two skis fastened together.
The first snowboard was brought to the Soviet Union by a well-known football commentator Vladimir Maslachenko. Being a great fan of mountain skiing, he came back from the Olympic Games in Calgary in 1988 to Moscow with a new fashionable hobby — snowboarding.
Now there are a lot of boards for snowboarding. The first one is a Rigid (Alpine) type. This type of boards is characterized by maximum speeds, accurate reaction and serious demands for skills and physical preparation of a sportsman. The second one is a Freeride type. Boards of this type are used both with soft, and with rigid set-up. The bright representative of this type of boards are swallow-tailed — long boards with a wide front part and a back part divided into two parts like a tail of a swallow. These boards are characterized by the wide area of sliding, the maximum effective length of edgings and ability to "emerge" in snow. The third type is the soft one. Boards of these types have a small length, poorly expressed orientation or have no orientation (Twin-tip), a small rigidity. Boards for gibing are made without edgings. Boards for freestyle can be of two versions: big-area, a halfpipe snowboarding-park.
I like snowboarding, my classmates and I often go to different ski resorts like Golden Valley, the Ohta-Park, and the Red Lake.  We go snowboarding every weekend.  We don’t take parents with us, because some parents can’t do snowboarding and they always worry about us. The word “snowboarding” is closely connected with the process of education as only going in for sports we can be healthy and have a real success at school

Summer in London
I want to show what people do in Britain in summer. I think that they go for a walk, eat more and more ice-cream, drink cold drinks and enjoy themselves all day long.

My Bristol Dream
It's a sunny summer day. I see a lot of balloons: yellow, green, red flying in the blue sky. And I'm going with one of them. It”s fantastic! But what is it? Oh, It's August Bristol International Balloons Fiesta! It's only my dream which I'm sure comes true one day!

London Summer
My London is very solemn and proud but summer makes it more simple and native. British summer holidays are the best time to understand that even Royal palaces look like cozy cottage houses. Would you like to go there?

Hello, Summer!
At last I'm in London. I can say only one word “Amazing!”
Everything here is so bright and exciting! Yesterday while I was walking along Tower Bridge, it began to rain. I think it was the moment when I felt the soul of British summer.
